|Brief description of the livelihood:||
MSGA is strategically positioned guardians of the Malunao Sanctuary which is part of the Seven Line Reef MPA of Aborlan. The members have seaweed farms in the multiple use zone close to the Malunao Sanctuary so MSGA is able to protect the MPA while tending the seaweed farms.
The association members do not use chemical fertilizer on their seaweed. They have on their own experimented with ways they can address the limitations of location to enable them to farm seaweed the whole year round by moving their monoline to areas where conditions are suitable. The area being cultivated by the association is considered a research site of the Western Philippines University [WPU]. The university is partnering with MSGA to strengthen research on seaweed culture in Aborlan. The establishment of BDFE will complement the existing partnership and position MSGA BDFE as a potential business model for empowering small scale fisherfolk associations to influence seaweed value chain development in Southern Palawan.
